AAFCO Celebrates Student Research Excellence in Animal Nutrition and Safety

The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) proudly announced the recipients of its first-ever Graduate Student Poster Contest during its 2026 Annual Meeting. This initiative celebrates the innovative contributions of graduate and doctoral students whose groundbreaking work is poised to advance animal nutrition, enhance feed safety protocols, drive ingredient innovation, and strengthen regulatory science.
Among the distinguished winners, Sierra Collier from Kansas State University secured first place for her comprehensive study on the composition and variability of soybean meal across U.S. processing plants. Hannah Shinnerl of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign earned second place for her pioneering efforts in developing a validated, cost-effective analytical method for chitin in insect-sourced materials. Vannith Hay, a doctoral student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was awarded third place for his vital research into enhancing the microbial safety of raw poultry-based pet foods through high-pressure processing.
Austin Therrell, Executive Director of AAFCO, lauded the success of the poster session, noting the inspirational vision of the students and their engagement with leading figures in the animal food industry, regulatory bodies, and academia. This contest, which saw nine finalists present their work in San Diego, underscores AAFCO's commitment to nurturing future talent and fostering crucial connections among academic, industrial, and regulatory communities.
