CVTEA Unveils Latest Accreditation Decisions for Veterinary Technology Programs

The American Veterinary Medical Association's Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA) has recently released its latest accreditation findings for veterinary technology programs. These decisions, made during their June meeting, signify pivotal advancements and adjustments within the realm of veterinary education, reflecting the committee's ongoing commitment to upholding high standards.

During its June 11–13 session at the AVMA headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill., the CVTEA meticulously reviewed numerous veterinary technology programs. Currently, the committee oversees 219 such programs, with a significant 84% holding full accreditation, demonstrating robust and consistent quality. Another 11% have achieved initial accreditation, signaling their emergence as new, promising educational pathways. A smaller segment, 3%, is under probationary accreditation, indicating areas needing improvement, while 2% have elected voluntary terminal accreditation.

Notable changes include Long Island University in Brookville, N.Y., which successfully transitioned from initial to full accreditation, a testament to its program's development and adherence to rigorous standards. Furthermore, 93 programs maintained their full accreditation status, and three programs remarkably regained their full accreditation. Nine programs saw their initial accreditation continued, and two programs remained on probationary status. Additionally, two new programs were placed on probationary accreditation, highlighting the dynamic nature of the review process.

A significant development was Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., receiving voluntary terminal accreditation, effective June 13. Conversely, Ashworth College in Norcross, Ga., had its accreditation withdrawn on the same date, emphasizing the stringent nature of these evaluations.

The committee also extended its emergency conditions policy regarding avian skills until November, when it will undergo further review. In earlier proceedings at its April meeting, the CVTEA granted initial accreditation, effective January, to four institutions: Community College of Beaver County, Trocaire College, Great Falls College/Montana State University, and Iowa Central Community College, broadening the landscape of accredited veterinary technology education.

The next CVTEA meeting is scheduled for November 5–7, underscoring a continuous cycle of assessment and improvement for veterinary technology programs.

Despite relying on temporary professionals for years to sustain hospital functions and prevent staff burnout, there hasn't been an effective method to quantify whether these staffing decisions were truly yielding the desired results.

Roo boasts an impressive track record, having facilitated over four million hours of relief coverage. The company intends to leverage this extensive historical data to furnish hospitals with a holistic perspective on staffing trends, moving beyond mere individual shift bookings to offer a broader analytical view.

Weir elaborated on the complexities faced by multi-site operations, stating that managing even a single hospital is challenging enough. When supervising dozens or hundreds of locations, discerning what strategies are effective and where improvements can be made becomes almost insurmountable. She cited examples of large enterprise clients booking over a hundred relief shifts annually across their networks, yet until now, their staffing choices were often based on intuition rather than concrete data.

The Analytics Center, according to Weir, empowers organizations to conduct comparative analyses of performance across different locations. It enables them to pinpoint recurring patterns, such as sites experiencing lower shift-fill rates or higher cancellation frequencies. This invaluable information can guide leaders in adjusting schedules, strategically allocating relief resources to areas of greater need, and proactively planning coverage.

Weir emphasized that the most critical metrics are those that narrate the story of a workforce. This groundbreaking research was formally presented on June 12 at the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum, held in Seattle, Wash.

The investigation encompassed a diverse sample group of 108 cats, carefully selected to represent various stages of chronic kidney disease. Through meticulous analysis, researchers pinpointed distinct metabolic signatures present in cats suffering from CKD. A significant portion of these observed metabolic changes pertained to lipid compounds, indicating a systemic impact on gut lining integrity, inflammatory responses, and overall fat metabolism within affected felines. Notably, N1-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide, abbreviated as 2PY, emerged as the most prominent fecal biomarker strongly linked to CKD. The current analysis further solidified this association, demonstrating that 2PY levels tracked consistently with serum creatinine, a widely recognized indicator of kidney function.
